Botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles.
While Botox is generally associated with the cosmetic reduction of lines and wrinkles, it is also effective in the treatment of certain medical conditions, such as chronic migraine, hyperhidrosis (excessive armpit sweating) and cervical dystonia (severe neck and shoulder contractions). It has also been used as a safe and successful treatment for spasms in the eye muscles for the last thirty years. It has been given full approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in cosmetic medicine and is now one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures
Botox is the registered trade name of the potent neurotoxin, Botulinum toxin A. Injecting Botox into a muscle weakens its ability to contract and when injected in micro amounts into the small muscles of the face it relaxes and smoothes out wrinkles. The most popular areas for injection are between the eyebrows, across the forehead and around the ‘crow’s feet’ at the sides of the eyes.
The injections take only a few minutes and the effects are generally seen after four to eight
days. The effect of the Botox injection will then last for between three and six months.
